Visual Arts

Beginning students develop essential skills in observation, composition, perspective, proportion, color theory, value, form, texture, and spatial relationships. As students advance, they engage in increasingly sophisticated projects requiring them to conceptualize, research, create, critique, revise, and present original works. 

Art history and cultural studies are integrated throughout the curriculum, so students understand how artists and artistic movements reflect history, identity, culture, politics, and society. Students examine works representing diverse cultures, artistic traditions, and contemporary perspectives. 

Critique is an essential component of the program. Students learn how to discuss artistic choices, receive constructive feedback, articulate artistic intentions, and revise their work. They also maintain sketchbooks and portfolios documenting their artistic development. 

Advanced students develop a professional-quality portfolio suitable for college admissions, scholarships, exhibitions, internships, and entry-level creative opportunities. Students may participate in school exhibitions, community art projects, competitions, museum experiences, visiting-artist workshops, and interdisciplinary productions. 

Areas of study may include: drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, digital illustration, graphic design, mixed media, portfolio development, art history, and exhibition preparation.
