Orchestra
The Orchestra Program provides intensive training for student string musicians while developing ensemble discipline, technical proficiency, musical literacy, and artistic expression. Students typically study violin, viola, cello, and double bass, with opportunities for collaboration with winds, brass, percussion, piano, and other instruments when repertoire is required.
Instruction emphasizes proper posture and instrument position, bow technique, tone production, intonation, shifting, vibrato, articulation, sight-reading, rhythmic accuracy, scales, arpeggios, music theory, and expressive interpretation.
Students study orchestral literature representing a variety of historical periods, composers, cultures, and musical traditions. Repertoire may range from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and twentieth century works to contemporary, film, popular, and culturally diverse compositions.
As students' progress, they develop greater independence as musicians and learn advanced ensemble concepts including balance, blend, phrasing, dynamics, stylistic interpretation, and following a conductor. Chamber music may also be incorporated to strengthen listening, communication, leadership, and individual accountability.
Performance is central to the program. Students participate in seasonal concerts, school productions, festivals, competitions, community performances, combined orchestra events, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Advanced students are encouraged to prepare audition repertoire for college and conservatory programs and may develop experience in solo performance, chamber music, conducting, arranging, and peer mentorship.
Potential career pathways: orchestral musician, chamber musician, recording musician, composer, conductor, music educator, arranger, music therapist, arts administrator, film-score musician, and other careers within the professional music industry.
