DWSA students learn about opportunities at college fair

Representatives from colleges and universities were available to students in the Denzel Washington School of the Arts library today, as the school held its college fair. Students connected with the representatives and learned about programs, majors and career paths. They also learned about scholarships and financial aid resources that can help them with planning for their college journey.

To start the year, seniors have been taking all the steps to get ready for college and beyond. They have been working with their counselors to make sure that they are prepared to take the next step.

“We have 53 amazing seniors who are really college ready,” said Nikia Jones, school counselor at DWSA. “They filled out their applications; we've met with all of our seniors; we've had senior night; they've started their applications for financial aid; and some of them are involved in our Great Potential Partnership with Purchase College. So our seniors are really college bound and ready to roll.”

Kelsha Rodriques, a junior at DWSA who will be graduating early at the end of the school year, was excited for the opportunity to talk to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) at the fair.

“It's very helpful,” said Kelsha. “I was a sophomore last year, so I wasn't really looking into college, but seeing that there's actually Black colleges that are being shown to me allowed me to have a better connection and feeling towards it. It gave me a little bit of excitement.

“Being able to see those front and center and gain more knowledge right then and there from people who actually went there brought me some type of comfort.”

Careers were also represented at the fair, and the New York State Police attended to showcase opportunities for high school graduates. Students also learned about financial aid and scholarships. The BNB Foundation – an organization that offers scholarships, professional development and coaching – attended the fair to share information about their scholarships, programs, workshops and mentorship initiatives.

Students heard from about 20 colleges and universities, and they will be using the knowledge gained to help guide them on their next steps as they prepare for graduation.
